Remembering Ruth Kees - a Local Hero
Today (March 8, 2019) is International Women’s Day, a good time to honor one of our local heroes: Ruth Kees. She was a tireless environmental activist and champion of sustainable practices. One of her favorite concerns was the protection of our ground water, the Issaquah aquifer, before most of even knew what an aquifer was. In recognition of her accomplishments, the City of Issaquah established the “Ruth Kees Award for a Sustainable Community,” which is presented annually to an individual who has worked to protect the natural resources of the Issaquah area. Harvey Manning, our club founder, received the award in 2009 (posthumously).
So, when you are hiking the “Ruth Kees Big Tree Trail” on the Tradition Plateau, think happy thoughts in remembrance of Ruth.
